Florida commutes may not be as bad as you think

For most citizens of the Sunshine State, getting out of the house is part of your routine. No matter what mode of transportation you choose, there will be risks involved.

While you may see accidents fairly regularly while you are out, you may not consider how likely you are to be involved in one. Now that the new year is in full swing, the reports for best states for driving and biking for 2019 are out.

Here's what you should know about Florida biking and driving and what it means for your commute.

Florida's commuting report card

The good news is that Florida ranked in the top 20 for both biking and driving. Although that means that there is room for improvement, there is a lot that Florida is doing to support your commute so that it is simple and safe.

Florida received a ranking of 15th for best states to drive in, while biking had a slightly better ranking of 10th. In general, both studies looked at the number of accidents as well as the current infrastructure and safety policies.

How the rankings affect your commute

2019 might be over, but that does not mean that there are no lessons to learn from the year. It is important to know what you can do to help improve the safety of everyone.

For example, in the car report, Florida did well in the "Access to vehicles and maintenance" category but struggled when it came to safety and infrastructure. When you are out on the road, it is up to you to drive safely and watch the other drivers on the road.

The scorecards are not only an overview of what happened the previous year but lessons for how you can impact commuter safety for yourself and others. When more people are aware of what it takes to be a safe commuter, the roads are safer for everyone.
