Florida residents may be guilty of distracted driving whenever they take their eyes off of the road. For instance, a driver may be distracted by changing a radio station or by turning the heat down. Distracted driving has been cited as a reason why car accident fatality numbers have been trending higher. However, thee are things that people may be able to do to overcome distractions.
Drivers may want to avoid using their infotainment system while the car is in motion. Another strategy may be to install apps on a smartphone that sends calls straight to voicemail or won’t notify a driver when a text or call has been received. According to a Consumer Reports survey, 52 percent of respondents said that they sent emails or text messages from their phone while driving. Those who don’t want to download an app may be able to pair their phones to their vehicles.
This may make it possible to answer calls or messages by voice instead of with a driver’s hands. In some cases, states have banned or restricted the use of cell phones in vehicles. Consumer Reports says that the best policy is to pay attention to the road above anything else. This may be true even if a vehicle has features such as lane departure warnings, collision avoidance or automatic emergency braking.
If a person is injured because of the actions of a distracted driver, he or she may be entitled to compensation. An attorney may review a case to determine if the person who caused the crash was impaired, on a smartphone or otherwise acting in a negligent manner when the collision occurred. If so, an injured victim may be entitled to payment for current and future medical bills, lost wages and lost future earnings.
