Kia and Hyundai to recall 1.3 million vehicles for engine issues

On Behalf of | Apr 18, 2017 | Auto Product Liability

Florida residents who own a vehicle made by Hyundai or Kia should be aware that the companies are preparing to issue a recall that is expected to affect more than a million vehicles that were sold in the United States and South Korea. The automakers made the announcement on April 7 after the vehicles were reported to have engine issues.

The recall will affect numerous models that are equipped with Theta 2 gasoline engines that were produced before August 2013. The affected models that are being recalled in South Korea include the Sonata and Grandeur sedans from Hyundai and the K5, K7 and Sportage from Kia. The recall will focus on metal debris that may be inside the engine crankshafts, which could cause the vehicle to stall.

The recall will commence on May 22, and those people whose vehicles are included in the recall may be entitled to get their defective engines replaced once their automobiles are inspected. In the U.S. alone, the recall could cost as much as $220.19 million. In a statement, the companies claimed that the recall was associated with manufacturing, not structural, problems with the engines.

If a person gets hurt in an accident that was caused by a defective vehicle part, an attorney with auto product liability experience may assist him or her with filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the vehicle. Depending on the severity of the person’s injuries, a lawyer may negotiate a settlement with the manufacturer to prevent his or her client from having to go through a trial. The settlement may potentially cover the cost of the person’s medical bills and other damages that are directly associated with the accident or auto defect that was responsible for causing his or her injuries.
