On Dec. 30, 2016, a car accident that occurred on a major Florida road left one person dead and another person with serious injuries. The crash took place at approximately 3:45 a.m. on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Manatee County.

Authorities stated that a 29-year-old woman was driving a Ford vehicle north in the southbound lanes. The 55-year-old driver of a GMC pick-up truck reportedly saw the oncoming vehicle and attempted to veer to the right to avoid it. The woman then allegedly veered to the left, colliding with the truck head on. The woman died at the scene of the accident. The male driver was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries that were said to be serious.

The woman’s family believe that she somehow became disoriented. They do not believe that she was driving under the influence, but the Florida Highway Patrol stated that there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from the wreckage. It also appeared that the female driver was not wearing her seat belt when the accident occurred. An autopsy report was still pending.

If a person suffers catastrophic injuries in a car crash that was caused by a negligent or drunk driver, they may have the right to seek compensation for their injuries. A personal injury attorney may work with the insurance companies involved to negotiate a settlement even if the responsible driver did not survive. The attorney may work to seek compensation for a variety of damages in addition to medical costs and loss of income, especially if the injured person can no longer work following the crash.
