In terms of safety, Florida drivers fall roughly in the middle in comparison to drivers in all 50 states. A insurance comparison site examined National Highway Transportation Safety Administration data from 2015 to determine which states had the safest drivers and where drivers were the most dangerous. It looked at motor vehicle accidents and examined statistics for drunk driving, careless driving, speeding, fatalities for every 100 million miles traveled, and failure to wear seat belts or obey traffic signals.
The study found that the most dangerous drivers were in Texas and Louisiana. The states tied for first place. Other dangerous states were South Carolina, North Dakota and Delaware. Texas officials have noted that there has been d at least one road fatality in their state each year for 16 years. The state was in third place for drunk driving deaths. Louisiana drivers were the worst in the nation for obeying signals and in fifth place for careless driving and fatalities per miles driven.
After years of declining traffic fatalities, deaths on the road are on the rise again. In 2015, the number of people killed in motor vehicle accidents rose 7.2 percent from the prior year. This was the biggest increase in four decades. The NHTSA is working with safety experts and policymakers to turn this number around.
A traffic accident can be devastating whether it happens due to drunk driving, texting and driving, speeding or for some other reason. Catastrophic injuries may be the result, and recovery could take months or years. Insurance companies may offer too little compensation to pay for a victim’s medical expenses and lost income. People who are in this type of a position may want to meet with an attorney to see if the filing of a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault motorist would be advisable.
