When considering doctors and treatment centers for mesothelioma and lung cancer, The Robert Boissoneault Oncology Institute (RBOI) includes seven radiation oncologists and dedicated staff members. RBOI has two offices in Marion County both located in Ocala, two offices in Citrus County, one in Inverness and one in Lecanto, and one in Sumter County in the Villages Medical Center. The American College of Radiology, a national organization, accredits oncology practices and awards accreditation for achievement of high practice standards. They assess quality of healthcare performed by the doctors, staff efficiency as well as the adequacy of the medical equipment in the practice. RBOI is the only practice in North Central Florida accredit by the American College of Radiology.
RBOI utilizes different methods of treatment depending on the type, size and location of the tumor. Treatment methods at RBOI vary from Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), which is an advanced mode of high precision radiotherapy that delivers a precise dose of radiation to a malignant tumor, to Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), which provides the ability to visualize the movement of tumors and organs during and in-between treatments. IGRT is very useful in treating lung cancers due to the movement of the lungs associated with breathing. IGRT accounts for the internal motion of the lungs and reduces the exposure of normal tissue to radiotherapy. IGRT is available at all of the RBOI treatment centers serving central Florida.
