What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer primarily caused by exposure to asbestos. The two most common types of mesothelioma are:

  • Pleural mesothelioma: When asbestos fibers are breathed into the lungs, they become lodged in the pleura, which is the membrane that lines and encases the lungs. This creates changes in the cells and causes the mesothelioma.
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma: Peritoneal mesothelioma is far less common than pleural mesothelioma. Rather than attacking the lungs, peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer of the membrane that encompasses the lining of the abdomen.

Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos is a material made from a set of fibers, used primarily for building insulation and fabrics. It was produced heavily in the early 20th century and used extensively by many companies in the 1940s through the 1970s. Although many of the companies producing and using asbestos knew its dangers, they allowed workers to be exposed to it. Some of the most common occupations at high risk for mesothelioma include:

  • Powerhouse workers
  • Factory workers
  • Electricians
  • Brake mechanics
  • Shipyard workers
  • Merchant seaman
  • Plumbers
  • Mechanics
  • Maintenance workers
  • Engineers
  • Navy workers
  • Laborers
